I liked the book as a start of the series. There were a few plot points that I had a hard time believing and I’m hoping the series will improve with the next book.

Jayne was slightly sarcastic and brutally honest. I loved her approach to things and that when things got tough she didn’t hesitate to call in the big guns. And what can you say about Midian? Oh EVERYTHING. A chain smoking fiend with deadly culinary skills and sarcastic mouth. Sure he’s a bit rough on Jayne but sometimes a chick just needs a good dose of reality.

Aubrey was a bit on the weak side for me. Weak morals, weak dialog.. just all around not my favorite character. He better pull it together in the next book. He and Chyogi Jake seemed to hover around the edge of the story and didn’t come through as real to me.

Saving the best for last is Ex. The ex Jesuit priest with a heart of gold. How does Jayne not see this man is in love with her? I know it can’t just be me thinking it. He does everything he can to protect her including buying a tracking device to make sure he knows where she is at. Sure it’s a bit Stalker-y but hey it’s done with love and the intent of keeping her from getting her butt killed.

In the end I had a hard time accepting Jayne’s matter of fact attitude. Her “ok, my uncle died and I’m rich. Sure I have supernatural powers and wards and protections. I’m not going to even find out how / why / when this happened and where it comes from. And on top of that I’m going to sleep with a guy who is married and be totally ok with it.” just kind of gets to me.

The riders they were combating (Evil bad spirits from another dimension inhabiting humans) were either impossible to kill or one shot took them down. I wish the author would have gone a bit more into detail as to why this was.
